Individual Counselling

Nilou believes in client’s innate capacity to heal, when given the right environment to do so. She sees the power within clients and the desire to move towards wholeness and wellbeing.

When clients experience traumatic events, their body’s resources are allocated to respond to the trauma in a way that survival becomes the primary concern. The body’s trauma response is adaptive in the face of threat. The body keeps the score and continues to be in survival mode even when the threat is no longer present.

Nilou provides a safe and supportive environment for clients to process traumatic events and their impact and to come back to recognizing their own power, their own capacity to heal, to love, and to live a full life.

Nilou is an LGBT-friendly therapist and that she appreciates exploring how broader cultural issues — such as racism and sexism — affect our well-being as individuals.

Couples and Family Counselling

Nilou has been trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples and families. She is passionate about helping couples and families deepening their intimacy, connection, and communication with their loved ones.

If you are in a relationship that keeps getting stuck in the same old pattern over and over again, Emotionally Focused Therapy can help stop that pattern. Emotionally Focused Therapy uses techniques that help people restructure the negative relationship cues that keep them stuck. Destructive, self-reinforcing patterns are eliminated and replaced with new, positive cycles of interaction. This creates the framework necessary to rebuild bonds and foster a secure and loving relationship.

Adolescent and Teen Counselling

The adolescent years are a vulnerable time for young adults, as they begin to bridge the gap between childhood and adulthood. Adolescents must constantly adapt to the stressors and demands that come with transitioning to young adulthood, leaving many feeling disoriented and overwhelmed.

Some of the experiences your adolescent must face are simply a normal part of growing up, and you are witnessing them assert themselves in a fight for independence. However, in the fast-paced world we are now living many issues our teens are faced with are far more complicated and, if not dealt with properly can lead to anxiety, depression, eating disorders, school and peer issues, and addictions to alcohol or drugs.

Therapy provides teens with a confidential, non-judgmental space to share their experiences, feel heard and understood, and find solutions to their issues.

Benefits of effective teen and adolescent counselling can be:

  • Processing trauma and difficult past experiences
  • Improved self-esteem and gain a sense of belonging, competence, and responsibility
  • Decreased anxiety and depression
  • Increased energy
  • Coping with stress
  • Improved communication skills
  • Managing anger and frustrations
  • Ability to appropriately express thoughts and feelings

Nilou has years of experience working with adolescents and young adults. Feel free to reach out to her if you have any questions.
