FAQ
All British Columbians injured in a motor vehicle accident can receive rehabilitation and medical services for their injuries from ICBC. They cover things such as:
- Medical and wage loss benefits
- Homemaking benefits
- Funeral expenses and death benefits.
ICBC will pay Accident Benefits to most occupants of a BC-licensed and insured vehicle in Canada and the United States. Accidents that occur out-of-province may be subject to the laws of that jurisdiction.
For the first 12 weeks after your crash, you can start your counselling with approved ICBC counsellors without the need for a doctor’s referral. Just make sure you have your ICBC claim number when getting treatment.
We need a doctor’s referral indicating the need for counselling related to the accident. We will apply on your behalf for your funding. Generally, you will receive 12 sessions to be completed within 12 weeks.
We will provide ICBC with an update at the end of 12 weeks and may apply for an extension if need be.
For longer-term care past the 12-week mark, ICBC may require you to get a referral from your physician. It’s a good idea to reach out to your claims adjuster to let them know about your treatment needs.
